Paul Pope is a 23 year
veteran of the West Michigan bluegrass scene. Paul got started
picking the banjo at 16 years of age when his grandfather suggested
he ride along to banjo lessons with him. The banjo bug soon bit
him, and the rest is history.
Paul has been a fixture in many West Michigan jam sessions and
social picking events. In 1994 Paul joined up with a group of
local pickers to form the Apple Blossom Bluegrass Band, and had
a wonderful 10 year run with that group. Apple Blossom traveled
within a 3 state region playing many prominent bluegrass festivals,
and they appeared on television and on many local radio stations
throughout the festival circuit. Paul also had a one year stint
with Lare Williams And New Direction Bluegrass Band, and after
taking some time off has now joined Rogue River. Along the way
Paul has been teaching banjo both in private lessons and in a
couple of Community Education classes for two local school districts.
Paul also enjoys acting in community theatre and filling in whenever
a group needs a banjo player to round out their sound, including
fundraising efforts for a couple of local ministries in West
Michigan.
Between holding a day job, playing music socially and in a group
setting, acting in community theatre, giving music lessons, setting
up a fledgling website design business, and being a father to
5 children, life is busy and hectic, but Paul wouldn’t
have it any other way. He enjoys being in he public eye and looks
forward to seeing you at a gig somewhere down the road.
